This story was used extensively in Chinese propaganda and became a part of the Chinese mythos surrounding the war. Numerous different accounts of that battle’s events exist (sometimes with the events taking place in a different order), all of them most likely not true as no such loss records could be find in the American war records. Nevertheless, amongst the Rise of the Dragon’s prizes, you may find a special skin for the Type 96 MBT – Type 96 “215”.

This skin changes the appearance of your Type 96 by applying the appropriate base paint (PLA Green), the PLA symbols, the tactical number “215” as well as six red stars on the barrel.

Other prizes of this era include:

    • Red star of the PLA decal
    • No. 215 decal (applicable to any vehicle)
    • PLA flag
    • Decal with the name “Lei Feng”, another mythical soldier figure of the PLA displayed as an avatar of the People’s Republic of China’s virtues

Next time, we’ll finally take a look at the vehicle prizes as well as the prizes of the next era called Rapid Development.

From our previous introductory article, you know we are working already on the Rise of the Dragon Battle Path for this summer and in this article we’ll tell you more about it.

    scr1

Reward-wise, the Rise of the Dragon Battle Path will be a bit different. There will be four Premium vehicles as usual:

    • ZBD-04A Armored Fighting Vehicle
    • VN17 Armored Fighting Vehicle
    • ZTL-11 Tank Destroyer
    • ZTZ-20 Main Battle Tank

But the other prizes will follow a certain topic as well – as its name suggests, the Rise of the Dragon Battle Path is all about the rise of China as a world superpower. As such, the prizes were overhauled with fewer not-as-valuable ones such as multiple-stage avatars, and more requested ones such as historical camouflages.

This Battle Path’s rewards will be separated into several parts based on China’s historical context and you’ll get to pass those parts in chronological order. In game terms, all these items will appear as a part of the standard level progression. The first part is dedicated to pre-war and wartime China.

Renault FT, Republic of China era (1912-1916)

When it comes to China, the first decades of the 20th century were an absolute mess. The year 1912 marked the end of the Qing dynasty rule after nearly three hundred years. China was subsequently reshaped into a republic but one man, Yuan Shikai, ruled it as a de-facto dictator. After his death in 1916, China entered the so-called Warlord Era as various remnants of the once massive Chinese imperial army (the Beiyang Army) vied for supremacy for over a decade. Only in 1928 did the Chinese National Party’s military forces bring them to heel during what was called the Northern Expedition. The campaign was supported by several large factions, including the Chinese Communist Party and, from the outside, the Soviet Union, which sought to increase its influence over the most populous country of the era.

The peace was, however, short-lived. The country plunged soon after into a massive civil war that left millions dead and tens of millions displaced or wounded. It was a brutal conflict on an epic scale, in which the Chinese Communist Party took on the forces of Kuomintang (or the Chinese Nationalist Party), the ruling party of the Republic of China. The war was interrupted by the Japanese invasion and resumed immediately after Japan’s surrender. The land only knew peace from large-scale warfare in 1949 with the defeat of Kuomintang and their exile to the island of Taiwan.

But let us return to the Warlord era for a moment, and its subsequent suppression. All pre-war Chinese armies were generally very poorly equipped and often poorly trained. To remedy the situation, some very light armor was ordered by Kuomintang along with European weapons, equipment (including the iconic German steel helmets) and, most importantly, advisors, including a German general of all people. That’s how China ended up with some Panzer I tankettes along with a few other German armored cars. In retrospect, it is fairly obvious that the whole German purchase was made for one reason only – German advisor kickbacks.

    panzer 1

Panzer I, Nanjing, 1937 via Tanks Encyclopedia

At first glance, tankettes were fine when the enemy (be it the CCP or warlord armies earlier) was armed with obsolete rifles. In reality, they arrived in a terrible shape, had to be completely refitted and were constantly overheating. Luckily for the Chinese, this wasn’t the only tank purchased. In the 1930s, Kuomintang obtained around sixty various armored vehicles from Vickers, including the popular Vickers Mk.E (or Vickers 6-ton) light tank. These were armed with short 47mm cannons with 20 purchased between 1934 and 1935.

    vickers

Vickers Mk.E, Shanghai, 1937 via Tanks Encyclopedia

The Vickers light tank was a potent vehicle for its time and was amongst the best equipment the Chinese had. It was therefore logical they’d use them during the ill-fated 1937 battle of Shanghai where Kuomintang forces (the best-trained divisions) defended the city from a Japanese onslaught. Unfortunately, the deployment was a disaster. Brave Chinese tank crews advanced through the city without cover only to be flanked and picked off one by one. Other tanks were lost in heroic but pointless charges. During the battle, all Chinese Vickers Mk.E tanks were destroyed or captured by the Japanese. But why are we discussing this tank in this article?

    early

Vickers Light Amphibious Tank "Dragon" in early camouflage

The reason’s simple. The first three assets are connected to it. Kuomintang tanks were painted in a rather beautiful camouflage consisting of sand, green, brown and grey spots and this Chinese (Early) camouflage will be available as a prize of the Battle Path. Additionally, Chinese troops adorned their vehicles with various names and inscriptions. Two of these will be represented in the form of decals.

    earlycamo

Click the image to open a larger version

They are real tank names and both appeared on different Vickers Mk.E’s:

    • Dragon
    • Tiger

For the final prize of this section, let us fast forward a decade to the final stages of the Chinese Civil War. By 1945, the hostilities between Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party forces resumed with both sides using captured equipment left behind after Japan’s surrender.

    tiger

    Vickers tank named "Tiger"

In late 1945, the Chinese captured a pair of Japanese Shinhoto Chi-Ha’s in the city of Shenyang. These tanks were relatively obsolete compared to late-war Allied equipment but were still considerably better than the pre-war stuff. Armed with long 47mm guns, they packed quite a punch. But before they could be used in the fighting, one of them was sabotaged by the captured Japanese engineers, leaving only the second vehicle (tactical number 102) operational.

The tank was repaired and transferred to the Chinese Northeast Tank Regiment, where it led a breakthrough during a massive battle of Jinzhou. As a mark of honor, the vehicle was renamed to “Gongchen” (“Heroic Tank”) since it became extremely respected and famous within the Chinese ranks.

    gongchen

    Gongchen tank, Beijing Military Museum

The tank survived the rest of the campaign and would become so famous that it would lead the victorious military parade in Beijing on October 1, 1949 – the day the People’s Republic of China was founded. It was retired from service in 1959 and can be seen in the Beijing Military Museum to this day.

While we won’t be introducing the Shinhoto Chi-Ha tank for obvious reasons, the “Gongchen” will be a skin for the Type 99A2 MBT.

And that’s it for the pre-war and wartime era’s rewards – next time, we’ll discuss the first prize vehicle of the Battle Path (the ZTZ-20 MBT) as well as the next time period on our list: the early People’s Liberation Army era. Until then:

    See you on the battlefield!

At least now we know for sure what the BP vehicles will be.

  4. As confirmed previously from the Chinese leak, the next BP will be Chinese-themed. Still no dates though.

    https://aw.my.games/en/news/general/summer-dragon

    Quote

As you are probably already aware or have deduced from the name, the next Battle Path named “Rise of the Dragon” is going to be Chinese-themed with four new Premium vehicles hailing from the Middle Kingdom. However, some content in the Battle Path will be tied to China’s best-known and perhaps most important armored vehicle, the Type 99 series Main Battle Tank, so let’s refresh our memory about what the vehicle is.

    scr1

    Type 99

As is common with many Asian vehicles (the Chinese in particular), there is very little official information and much of what we know is based on various estimates from military analysts working for reputable sources.

The general consensus is that the production variant of the Type 99 MBT was developed from the Type 99 prototype as China's first true third generation MBT. A prototype called 9910 (often – incorrectly – labeled as Type 98) was first shown in public on the Chinese National Day military parade on October 1 1999. The prototype and production Type 99 both abandon the Soviet concept of tanks in favor of more western technology, even though traces of Russian designs can be found deep inside the vehicle.

    scr2

Type 99 Prototype during parade rehearsals, 1999

The hull is low and generally typical of Chinese tanks but, unlike the previous Chinese MBTs, the turret is welded. The vehicle is protected by composite armor and by an advanced spaced armor kit and ERA (allegedly comparable to Russian Relikt), resulting in an estimated frontal protection on par with the newer variants of the Russian T-90 MBT (roughly 1000-1200mm of RHAe versus HEAT rounds).

Type 99 is equipped with a JD-3 laser system that allows it to send high intensity laser bursts (dazzling) at targets that are using their own lasers to target the Type 99 MBT. The desired effect of this is the damaging of enemy optics and temporary blindness of the enemy gunner.

The main armament is the automatically loaded fully stabilized Chinese 125mm ZPT-98 smoothbore gun, capable of firing 9M119M Invar and 9M119M1 Invar-M missiles (the often-cited Refleks designation belongs to the launching system, not the missiles themselves) along with other standard former Warsaw Pact 125mm ammunition. Some sources claim the gun is a license-produced version of the Russian 2A46M, but that is not the case – the gun is longer.

The effective rate of fire is around 8 rounds per minute. The Fire Control System is indigenous and – allegedly – highly accurate, although how exactly it fares compared to other contemporary systems is not known.

    scr3

    Type 99

The vehicle is powered by a 1200 horsepower 150HB diesel, giving it decent mobility (the maximum speed of 80 km/h, cited by Wikipedia, is, however, speculative). The acceleration is said to be very good as well thanks to its power-to-weight ratio of approximately 23 hp/t (the vehicle weighs around 52 tons).

Performance-wise, Type 99 should be on par with other third generation tanks such as the T-90 or Abrams, but it has never participated in any armed conflict and therefore it's very difficult to evaluate its performance. Some Chinese sources are known for notoriously overestimating domestic tanks to the point of absurdity and the only lead the public has to Chinese vehicle performance beyond the truly obsolete types participating in Middle-Eastern wars is the Chinese participation in Tank Biathlon.

In Chinese service, approximately 1200 Type 99s of several variants have been built since 2001 and production seems to continue still. It is, however, unlikely that this particular vehicle will ever be exported and various speculations about export deals to Pakistan and other countries that can be found on the internet are almost certainly false. Other advanced Chinese vehicles, such as the VT-4, are, however, available for export.

    scr2x

    Type 99A

As for the Type 99A sub-variant – the Type 99A is an improved model of the Type 99, first tested in August 2007 and entering service in 2011. It shares most of its predecessor's features:

    • A western-style welded turret
    • 125mm ZPT-98 autoloaded smoothbore gun, capable of firing Invar and Invar-M missiles
    • Powerful diesel engine giving it excellent mobility

But there are improvements. For one, the vehicle is powered by a 1500hp 150HB-2 diesel engine, an improved variant of the older 1200hp 150HB model used on the original Type 99. This gives it excellent mobility and acceleration, although the numbers available publicly (maximum speed of 80 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 32 km/h in 12 seconds) are unofficial and most likely speculative. The weight, however, increased from approximately 52 tons to 54 tons or even more (sources vary).

The turret was also enlarged and fitted with a more effective, redesigned ERA kit and possibly a soft-kill APS system.

Precious little is known about this most modern Main Battle Tank of the People's Republic of China. Type 99A supposedly has more advanced electronics (including a GPS system and an indigenous battle management system), but details are very much classified.

It's worth noting that while many online sources use names such as Type 99A1 and Type 99A2, these names are incorrect and (much like the Type 98 designation) probably made up by analysts or even journalists. What is sometimes referred to as Type 99A2 is in fact the Type 99A while the Type 99A1 is still "just" a Type 99.

China is currently estimated to operate around 500 of these modernized Type 99As with more being converted from the standard Type 99 MBTs. Type 99A, just like the original Type 99, is not offered for export and will very likely remain only in Chinese service.

    scr4

    Type 99B

In Armored Warfare, the Type 99 MBT exists in several forms:

    • 9910 Tier 7 MBT (a predecessor to the Type 99 series)
    • Type 99 Tier 8 MBT
    • Type 99A Tier 9 MBT
    • Type 99A2 Tier 10 MBT (the name here is historically incorrect but has been in use for so long it makes no sense to rename it)
    • Type 99A2-140 Tier 10 Premium MBT armed with a largely fictional 140mm gun (a 140mm gun was never installed on this chassis and was only mentioned in passing by certain Chinese sources)

In the near future, these will be joined by a previously announced (and unfortunately also fictional) Type 99B MBT.

On the bright side, the Battle Path will offer skins and other suitable visual elements even for the progression Type 99 series and we can’t wait to start showing you in the near future.

In case anybody is wondering if the 99B will be included in the BP:

  5. https://aw.my.games/en/news/general/introducing-commander-samuel-thorpe

    Quote

Samuel Thorpe is the newest commander in Armored Warfare and the first addition to the pool in a few years. His history is closely tied to Perihelion.

    thorpe2

Samuel Thorpe was born during the first years of the Collapse, although it wasn’t known as such back then. His parents perished during a violent civil revolt, murdered by a vicious mob. In an out of foster homes for most of his youth, life offered Samuel few options but to join the U.S. Army. Later, he became a small-time mercenary as many opportunities arose for the men of his profession.

    scr2

Click the image to open a larger version

His lucky break came in the summer of 2028 when he was hired by David Murdoch, a legendary investor from Chicago putting together a small but well-armed security force. He was supposed to help train the troops in Arizona but the operation ended with an unexpected outcome. A mysterious enemy attacked and decimated a nearby military base. Woken in the night by the sound of gunfire, Thorpe and his troops rushed to aid the beleaguered U.S. Army troops and managed to fend of the attack. Samuel is still relatively inexperienced and eager to claw his way up the food chain to reach the top.

Gameplay-wise, Samuel Thorpe currently shares the skill field with Maximilian Koenig with his main ability being an Experience income boost, which makes him highly suitable for new players and reflecting the fact that he came to Perihelion to provide training.

    scr3

Click the image to open a larger version

But here’s the interesting part for those of you who already familiar with the game – his skills may and will change. Over the course of his stint in the desert, Thorpe became familiar with his assigned vehicle, a customized BMPT by the name of Black Mamba. His skills will therefore reflect this choice in the future, but this may not be the end. Lore-wise, Thorpe may switch vehicles in the future and his skills could reflect that. But who decides that?

You, of course. The way to make such choices will be indicated in future Perihelion missions. Participate in the Perihelion event in an indicated manner to directly decide this commander’s fate. It will be in your hands.

Personally, I hope he will become a mobility-focused commander as we are sorely lacking in commanders that are good in that aspect. Ophelia is quite literally the only commander with notable mobility buffs in the game right now.

But with the bonus XP skill right now, he is a very good commander for anybody still grinding up vehicles. Don't underestimate the +35% XP bonus (+40% at max rank), it can considerably shorten grinds since the bonuses are multiplicative on top of premium time, insignias and boosters.

  7. https://aw.my.games/en/news/general/development-type-99b

    Quote

Today, we’d like to tell you more about the Type 99B Main Battle Tank that’s coming to Armored Warfare.

    scr1

As its name suggests, the Type 99B is a variant of the Type 99A Main Battle Tank you all know and love. With one caveat, that is – it isn’t real. No such thing as Type 99B exists in real life, this is an alternative history vehicle built around the idea of making an urban fighting variant of the Type 99A MBT. The idea is based on a render that appeared on the Chinese Weibo social network around 2016. In the render author’s mind, the biggest changes compared to the Type 99A included:

    • Improved ERA with cage armor covering the rear
    • Hard-kill APS (possibly of the GL-5 type)
    • Improved sensors and FCS with advanced optics
    • 360 degrees vision system for the crew
    • Roof-mounted RCWS

The rest of the vehicle remained roughly the same.

Now, there are a lot of problems with the concept. For one, it suffers from the same issues some Russian tanks are suffering in real life – it has a carousel-style automatic loading mechanism and, from what we can see, no extra roof armor to speak of – only what looks like some composite plating. Why is there a man-operated machine gun in front of the RCWS like that? And a few other issues. And that just wouldn’t do – the way it was, the concept would fix no issues that exist with our Tier 10 Type 99A2, which is why, in the end, we decided to heavily deviate from the original vision. Here’s what we came up with.

As we wrote above, the Type 99B will be a Tier 10 Premium Main Battle Tank.

As you can see, it looks a lot like Type 99A2 at first glance (with the obvious difference being the dozer blade), but not to worry – the tank has a couple of tricks up its sleeve.

    scr2

Let’s start with the model. The original Type 99A2 has a couple of issues that we’ll also be addressing and that are already fixed in Type 99B. For starters, it tends to explode rather enthusiastically when hit from the front. That’s caused by the fact that the ammo carousel is located on the bottom of the hull and it’s possible to penetrate it either via the lower frontal armor weakness or via the thinly armored sides of its hull.

There are three main changes we made to the Type 99B that address that. First and foremost, the turret was extended and the ammunition rack module was moved to the back of the back of the back of the turret. Welcome to the 21st century where urban combat can and does happen.

Secondly, the lower frontal plate and frontal side weakspots are covered by the dozer blade – and yes, it also increases its ramming damage. And, last but not least, the hull sides are now covered with ERA elements. These go further to the back than on the original Type 99B, but we dropped the cage armor (which doesn’t do much in the game anyway). In other words, this tank is designed around Armored Warfare gameplay to make it interesting. The tank will be protected by a hard-kill APS system (similar to the one used on the ZTQ-15) as well as 360 degree smoke cover.

Next, the firepower. The tank’s armed with two weapons. The first one is the main 125mm cannon (the longer version like on the Type 99A2) with identical performance to the Type 99A2 (we’ll probably tweak the reload time in order not to make it imbalanced). The gun fires APFSDS rounds as well as your favorite BTJ-III HEAT shells.

    scr3

The second system is a roof-mounted Red Arrow ATGM launcher with two tubes firing thermobaric missiles similar to the Ataka-F model of the Ramka/Terminator. As the launcher is roof-mounted, these will serve as mid-long range weapons to dislodge static enemy vehicles from their positions. The original idea for this vehicle was to have a shorter gun and a classic ATGM launcher combo (with tandem warheads) with the gameplay resembling that of the popular Seongun-915 MBT (switching between missiles and shells to maximize your damage per minute value). We decided to do things this way to make them enjoyable but feel free to tell us what you think!

And finally, the mobility. In short, despite the additional weight, it’ll be roughly the same as the Type 99A2 one.

In summation, what you have here is a fast and agile mid-range support MBT that won’t be able to reliable break through enemy lines, but will be an excellent fire support platform. To address the huge elephant in the room – yes, this all does sound like a better version of the Type 99A2. That is because, simply put, it is. We’d like to implement some of the fixes we are planning for the progression Tier 10 MBT, which, as we are aware, performs notoriously poorly, the previous rebalance didn’t help in this regard. But, rest assured, we will take a look at the performance of the Type 99A2 in the near future. We won’t leave it hanging, that much we can promise.

We hope that you’ll enjoy the Type 99B and, as always:

    Xv0gFoZ.png

Since it's coming by itself, it's a safe bet to say the 99B will likely come before the upcoming BP, or at least not be a focus of it.

We are fully aware that new regular PvE missions that appear in rotations are one of the most popular pieces of content, which is why we are working on a new one called Wages of Sin.

    scr1

To those of you who are participating in the Perihelion event, the name might sound familiar – indeed, the mission is an in-game recreation of three of this event’s missions: Wages of Sin, Revelations and Spoils of War. The event features a lot of lore and a lengthy story that can be read here but, in summation:

You play the role of Samuel Thorpe, a mercenary tasked by a company called Perihelion to train its security force in an Arizona desert. One night, you are woken by one of the officers, Gail Espinoza and the sounds of gunfire in the night – a local U.S. Army base is under attack by a mysterious enemy!

    scr2

Now, if you’ve read the Perihelion event’s story, you already know what happens next but the players who haven’t will be in for a surprise and, more importantly, a tough fight.

In this PvE mission, we are taking as much of your feedback into account as we can. No more immortal drones, enemies spawning right behind you, rooftop infantry, enemy mortars or broken Hunter AFVs killing your vehicles with a single shot. Instead, you’ll see plenty of action that returns to the roots of what makes Armored Warfare PvE fun.

    scr3

The mission will take place in Arizona in the night but there’s no need to worry – we will not be using the infravision mechanics as they are not exactly popular. Some of its elements will seem familiar to you while others are brand new.

Since we are working on several new assets and other improvements for it, the mission will not be ready before summer. We wanted to let you know ahead of time that it’s coming (along with plenty of other content!) so that you have something to look forward to.

    scr4

We definitely hope you’ll enjoy playing it as much as we are enjoying making new things for you and, as always:

Bold claims that the map will be fun to play on, seeing how the previous new desert maps were more or less flops.

While it's nice to see the AD1 map reused, I have my reservations since the map is very much one big corridor for players to push in one direction, and not too enjoyable to play on with squishy vehicles given the corridor nature.

Seeing campaign elements tie in directly with the game development is encouraging at least.

  10. Story updates and new secrets! https://aw.my.games/en/news/general/perihelion-story-update-1

    Spoiler

    And now, the continuation:

Halfway down the hill, the anxiety suddenly fell off me. I could not explain it but I suppose it had something to do with actually seeing the enemy take form. No longer was I experiencing any dread like when we had heard that terrible voice on the radio and judging from the determined postures and quiet nods from the crew of the Mamba, they felt the same way, as if an evil spell was suddenly lifted.

    mis1

I shifted in my seat, eagerly scanning the optics screens for my first target. Several enemy vehicles broke off the main assault and started making their way towards us, but their behavior was somewhat strange. Not that I am much of an expert in armored tactics but I’ve never seen armor driven like that with the vehicles making frequent stops without firing and driving seemingly directionless, their weapon systems aiming towards us but rarely firing off a shot, like drones with their controlling signal disrupted.

It simply made no sense for the U.S. Army base to have been defeated by such opponents, but here we were. And what was worse, I couldn’t see the enemy infantry anywhere anymore, as if they had vanished into thin air. A half-loaded truck was all that was left from the scene I witnessed mere minutes ago. Not for the first time felt the entire operation dream-like, a feverish nightmare I had to wake from any minute. But the ringing sounds of bullet impacts on my metal steed’s armor were all too real, I reminded myself, as I shifted my focus once again to the targeting display.

    ***

Of the battle itself, not much can be said beyond the fact that we held our own. The fate of the enemy was sealed by the gradual arrival of other Perihelion forces from the camp and less than thirty minutes after the initial encounter, all that remained of the once numerous hostile force was a pile of smoldering wreckage.

That’s when things got really weird again.

I was just putting myself together after the fight, leaning against the Mamba and wishing I had picked up smoking because now it would be the perfect time to light a cig while looking badass. No such luck, I thought. I’d have to do with some answers, starting with the identity of our recently deceased friends. Espinoza was out now as well, arms folded tight and looking around as if unsure what to do.

    “Yo!” I waved at her.

She suddenly grew stiff and looked really uncomfortable but our eyes met after a split second. Clearly she wasn’t looking forward to talking to me again and I realized that instant she knew more of the situation than she was letting on.

Espinoza seemed quite content just standing there looking awkward – fine, I have to make the first step because by now, I was just dying to find out what was the last hour all about.

Casually strolling towards her, I leaned once again against the cold steel of her Nightsinger, not looking at her but at the sky above, the desire to get to the bottom of the riddle fighting basic human decency of leaving the clearly distraught woman alone. Needless to say, the curiosity won.

Starting a discussion with a lady with a statement spiced by a hint of accusation was hardly gentlemanly, but I didn’t really think of myself that way anyway. I am more a lovable rogue type. Yeah, right, who am I kidding – I’m about as lovable as plague.

“So. You know what’s happening, don’t you.”

No reaction apart from a barely perceptible sideways glance. I sighed.

“Look, you need to tell me what’s going on. People got hurt here, our people,” I pointed towards a burning Jaguar knocked out seconds after its arrival, its shell-shocked, soot-covered crew sitting next to it while tending to some minor burns.

“I mean,” I continued, “you know this makes no sense, right? These... whoever it was,” I waved roughly in the direction of the nearest wreck, “they trashed the whole base looking for... whatever. But we take care of them in minutes?”

I shook my head, once again lifting my eyes up, towards the stars.

“Either we’re the best goddamn outfit on the planet, or the Army REALLY let itself go. And given how half of our own guys are ex-U.S. military, I don’t think that’s the case.”

She pursed her lips, opened her mouth as if she was going to say something... and then closed it again, shaking her head as well, leading to yet another pause before she finally decided what to say.

“Sam... you’re a nice guy. I like you. I really do. That’s why I am telling you...”

She finally looked me in the eyes with previously unseen intensity to underline the impact of her words. She was practically begging.

“...walk away from this. Get another job. Tell Murdoch to go fuck himself.”

Bullshit. I wasn’t going to let this go and the red, ugly, bitter furnace of anger swelled in my chest. I suddenly wanted to rage, to shout at her for even suggesting anything like that but the impulse thankfully passed as quickly as it came with logic taking over again. I wasn’t about to ruin my chances of having a guide through this rabbit hole slash acid trip by acting as a petulant child. Besides, whoever was to blame for this mess, it clearly wasn’t her.

“No. No way am I walking out without any answers. We haven’t known each other for long but... I think you know me well enough for that already.”

Now the look in her eyes was pure sadness. Not the teary kind, the deep, black kind that no amount of drink would cure.

    “I know... I know.”

She shook her head and took a deep breath before looking back at me.

“That wreck nearby,” she pointed towards a large boxy vehicle with half of its suspension torn off by an explosion. I’ve never seen such a design in my life, not even at the earlier demonstration.

“It doesn’t look burned and one of the hatches is open. Check inside. And... don’t worry. I’ll wait here.”

I hesitated for a moment. I wasn’t exactly keen on going through some dead guys’s belongings, but she waved me off.

    “Go... go!”

Listening to her seemed liked the best course of action and I slowly made my way towards the hulk. One of the hatches on top was indeed open so I carefully climbed one side scored by impact holes from some autocannon rounds and, after checking for unpleasant surprises, carefully wormed my way inside.

When I – dumbfounded as I was – returned, she was still there as she had promised, waiting for me with a canteen of water in her hand, which she offered without saying a single word. I took a big gulp.

    “So...”

    “So?”

“There’s nobody inside. The controls are... strange. Some weird language I can’t decipher. Doesn’t look Asian though... I don’t know,” I threw my hands up in despair.

    She nodded before looking around.

“A few of the troops just reported in. All of them are empty. No bodies. No dead infantry either. Everything’s just... empty.”

    I frowned.

“You knew I’d find nothing? Why?”

    mis2sto4

Her expression didn’t change, not one bit.

“I didn’t know you’d find nothing at all. Just...” she bit her lower lip, “something weird. I don’t know either.”

She looked so lost, massaging the temples with the thumb and middle finger of her right hand.

But the mystery of missing bodies had to wait. By now, the Army survivors began to emerge from their hideouts and they looked none too happy to see us. I saw James Twocrows arguing with some officer before joining us with a worried look on his face. The reason was pretty obvious.

“They think we were involved in this, right?”

    Twocrows sighed.

“Yes, of course they blame us. They suffered a lot of casualties, nearly all of them fatal. The enemy...” he paused, “left no survivors. Highly unusual.”

He was right, of course. In all wars, the wounded far outweigh the dead, but this wasn’t the case. The enemy clearly wasn’t interested in witnesses. Many would still hide in the buildings and bunkers around the base though, there would be at least some local surveillance footage... I shuddered to think what the enemy would have done had we not interfered with their plans.

“And seeing we’re the only ones walking and talking...”

Espinoza gave me another long, appraising look as if deciding how much on board I was and, more importantly, how much she could trust me. I wasn’t sure about my odds but Lady Luck definitely was on my side tonight.

“Jim. Sam. That truck – get a few men and,” she pointed towards the transport the enemy was trying to capture before our ever so rude interruption, “move the boxes they were after to our camp. Whatever was causing the jamming is gone now. The landlines are probably still fucked but I’ll try to raise Ferguson or even Murdoch directly through the satellite link. Post some sentries around the stash, nobody, and I mean NOBODY is to touch it without my presence. Not even you, Sam, got it?”

I kept nodding without even realizing it at first. This was a situation where I felt comfortable with her in charge as I still had no idea what was going on, but if getting my hands dirty brought me closer to finding out, so be it. Besides, good old manual labor is the best cure for aching mind, as Ms. Pembroke, the shrew that ran the last foster home I’d been in, used to say. Only now, years later, could I appreciate how right she was.

    ***

The sunrise caught us all packing. It’s not easy to break a camp but try tearing it down without leaving half of the shit behind.

Nobody slept anymore that night. We had several wounded – mercifully, none of them grievously – and were preparing to move out. The critical stuff first, then everything else. Everyone moved with the sense of urgency normally reserved for the direst of catastrophes or the darkest of fears.

The area was now positively swarming with U.S. armed forces units with seemingly endless columns of armor and infantry passing south of our camp. All of them gave us dirty looks but thankfully no more than that. From what Espinoza said, she managed to raise Murdoch pretty fast following the incident and he immediately got to work, using his military contacts to solve the situation.

The arrival of the first U.S. response units almost ended in another battle but, at the last possible moment, the standoff was concluded with the G.I.’s standing down following a call from a superior officer, which, as far as those of us who heard it could tell, involved a lot of shouting and expletives I’d rather not repeat. Uncle Sam was hurting and was looking for someone to punish. Anyone, really – preferably the guilty, but they would surely settle for us instead.

In the end, somehow (I don’t know how), cooler heads and Murdoch’s influence prevailed and we were let go, including the loot which – as it turned out – truly was the property of Perihelion.

    ***

My breakfast was interrupted by Espinoza waving at me from the still-standing comms tent (we planned on tearing it down last in case we still needed it). I sighed, bit one last time into the Chef-MRE-provided sandwich and threw the rest away, realizing I probably wouldn’t have enough time to finish it anyway.

Espinoza was with comms officer Abernathy, both tinkering with what looked like a black box made of metal and plastic with some wires attached to it. I was hardly an IT expert, which is why I decided to waited for an explanation while attempting to not look stupid. It was a challenge, especially the last part. After a few seconds, the box whirred and whizzed and a list of symbols appeared on the screen of a nearby laptop. Abernathy frowned.

“It’s a drive of some sort, for those of you who didn’t know, and it’s coded. Obviously.”

Espinoza, looking over his shoulder, sighed in response.

    “Can we crack it?”

    Abernathy sat up, alarmed.

“Should we though? This is Perihelion property. I doubt Miss Ferguson would approve...”

“...of us checking for potential booby traps?” Espinoza smiled innocently.

Abernathy’s expression turned sour, just like every time he felt someone took him for a fool.

“That’s bullshit and you know it.”

“Mark,” I interceded. “I appreciate your loyalty, I really do, but we almost got killed. We’d really...”

And I emphasized the word ‘really’, as in ‘there will be consequences if you don’t.’

“....really like to get some answers.”

He got the message and sighed, shaking his head and pushing the glasses to his forehead.

“I’ll see what I can do.”

A couple of minutes and several curses later, Abernathy found something.

“I’ve never seen a code like that...” Abernathy mumbled to himself. “Let me just...”

The screen of the connected laptop suddenly lit up, then turned black with strange symbols appearing all over. I should have felt worried but, for some reason, another – completely unrelated – though crossed my mind instead; if I was to make a movie about machines taking other machines over, this is how I’d have imagined the process looking like.

Blurred images and short video reels rapidly filled the screen. I managed to glimpse a few details but the sequence was too fast for a human to follow.

A young man dressed in an ancient pilot’s attire and a wizened one-eyed warrior dueling with katanas in front of a Tiger tank on a plain that had no end. An inhumanely tall Viking and a silver-skinned boy crossing a sea on a Drakkar. New York City, entombed in ice. A two-headed dragon dogfighting a Great War biplane, the rattling of Spandau machineguns almost pathetic against the beast’s mighty roar and flame – and yet, the dragon was losing. An army of the dead invading the world of the living under a skull-shaped, alien moon.

The imagery ended as abruptly as it had begun with a single image featuring a text field clearly intended for a password.

    monitor

“What the hell...” whispered Abernathy. I and Espinoza looked equally dumbfounded. Were the scenes just some random computer-generated imagery hiding some true meaning? And what of the symbol?

As if in response, Abernathy shrugged.

“This is way beyond my pay grade, folks. I have never even seen such code, no way in hell we’re cracking it in the few hours we have left.”

“Hmm,” Espinoza bit her lower lip again, “it would be nice to know more before getting in touch with Murdoch.”

    She turned to me.

“He promised he’d contact us as soon as he had a moment. And...” she paused, “I believe him.”

“Well,” I responded, ever more curious, “might as well try to guess the password. If we succeed, we might even get an upper hand over Murdoch. And if not, who’s to say this particular drive wasn’t destroyed in the fighting?”

Abernathy scowled and glared at me but Espinoza just nodded. Eventually, he gave up and agreed to help us. Espinoza brought us all some coffee (much to Abernathy’s displeasure –someone was AGAIN desecrating his place of worship with vile liquids!) and we finally started focusing on the task at hand.

“You have to be able to enter the password anywhere since these disks are portable, so... it’s probably a set of standard Latin alphabet letters, related to the image,” explained Abernathy.

“Furthermore, I doubt there are any numbers in there. It’s probably a single word, easy to remember and not capital-letter-sensitive. The length, however... could be anything,” he concluded.

In short, he didn’t have a clue. But, who knows, we might get lucky.

The new secret begins with the creepy computer image, which very obviously leads to a Google Form.

    slR4sMB.png

    https://forms.gle/ErEbEGW2A949rUkQ8

    pdt72WY.png

The next steps are obviously to find the password, based on the provided clues. SS has also generously provided us with some guidelines for the answer:

    • Latin alphabet letters (A-Z)
      • related to the image somehow
    • No numbers
    • One single word
    • Not case-sensitive
    • Easy to remember

This is where we are now, so far we have only been coming up with possible leads and nothing is certain yet. Unfortunately we also have no way of knowing whether we have the right answer until SS tells us, since the Google Form does not discriminate what you type in there.

To make things harder, each player will only have five attempts at the answer. Don't jump to conclusions and waste your chances. (the image below is from a dummy response)

  11. More leaks, courtesy of Alextermi123 on Official. Keep in mind this is dated back from February 6, so it may be even less accurate than the initial leak.

    xVPA9hO.png

So the current (possible) list of BP vehicles are the following:

    • ZTL-11
    • PGZ-04/A (or PGZ-09)
    • VN17
    • ZTZ-99B
    • ZTZ-20 (fictional, or blueprint)

Edit: found the source of the screenshot, with more info: https://tieba.baidu.com/p/7813691876

    ZphtBZX.png

BP will supposedly start in June or July, but the 99B might come in May?

  12. So this leak turns out to be mostly accurate after all.

First clue: the KIA bounty hunt included the following mention for the upcoming BP, practically confirming it to be Chinese-themed.
    https://aw.my.games/en/news/general/bounty-hunt-underdogs-17PY0h6w.png

Second clue: SS confirms the ZTZ-20 and Type 99B will be coming, on the AL Discord server.

Qbicle's translations of the two videos are accurate. I have reuploaded the two videos Youtube for archiving and referencing:

    So... yay I guess.:partyseal:
