Northern Wind BP Megathread

Recommended Posts

Same old, same old. It's exactly like the last BP, so I'll just copypaste info and tips from last time here.

Quote

We’re happy to announce that the Viking-themed Northern Wind Battle Path campaign has just begun.

This three-month-long campaign offers you the opportunity to get your hands on four very special reward vehicles, including the long-awaited Stridsvagn 2000 Tier 10 Premium MBT, but other valuable prizes are also available, including the Jomsviking skins, decals and much more. You can find more information about the campaign in the Frequently Asked Questions section below and in our dedicated article.

In order to join the Battle Path campaign, please enter the game and click on the Northern Wind icon on the upper bar.

From there, you can simply purchase the Battle Path access:

  • Standard pass (access only)
  • Golden pass with access and 50.000 Battle Coins

Please note that there might be a delay of up to 10 minutes between the purchase and the access to the event. The abovementioned access bundles are also available on the MY.GAMES Market platform.

FAQ in spoilers:

Spoiler

How does it all work?

Simply put, you earn Battle Coins by completing missions and then spend them to raise your Battle Path level while earning Battle Path Premium vehicles, layer avatars, skins, decals and other goodies, including a reward tank with Premium status, the Tier 10 Stridsvagn 2000 MBT. You can also get other Premium vehicles as well.

What do I have to do?

You may simply play your battles as usual and earn Battle Coins to unlock the 50 available Battle Path levels, which contain exciting prizes, including 3 Premium vehicles. To boost your Battle Coin income, you can also complete special Missions.

The Battle Path campaign is divided into four paths (mission chains), each with its set of 6 or 5 missions. Additionally, two sets of tasks are also available:

  • Battle Coin missions (deal damage, destroy enemy targets and earn XP for Battle Coins)
  • Challenges (weekly tasks and an additional source of Battle Coin income)

All these extra missions only reward Battle Coins with two exceptions:

  • The final mission of each chain rewards you with a new camouflage called Scandinavian Ornament
  • The fourth (Elite) chain offers a number of CV90120 Ghost parts as a reward

Otherwise, all the Battle Path rewards (vehicles, skins etc.) are a part of the 50-level progression.

What are the Battle Coins?

The Battle Coins are a unique currency, required to advance through Battle Path levels. You can also spend Battle Coins on completing difficult missions without having to actually complete their requirements in the game. On the Battle Path screen, you can see your Battle Coin balance in the upper right corner.

How many levels are there?

There are 50 levels in total. For reaching Level 50, you will a reward tank with Premium status, the Stridsvagn 2000 Tier 10 MBT.

How can I start a mission chain (path)?

Three mission chains are available, as such:

  • Series 1 for Tier 3-10 MBTs
  • Series 2 for Tier 3-10 LTs and AFVs
  • Series 3 for Tier 3-10 TDs and SPGs

These chains are available right from the start and do not require an unlock token. The fourth mission chain, called Elite, is available only upon the completion of the previous three chains and contains CV90120 Ghost parts (blueprints). Elite missions can only be completed using Tier 8-10 vehicles.

Some missions require me to do things I do not understand, like Kill or Eliminate. Can you explain?

There are several goal categories included:

  • Kill/Destroy
  • Assist
  • Eliminate

Kill (or Destroy, which is the same thing) simply means you have to be the player who deals the finishing blow to the target.

Assist means that you have to be the player who deals the most damage to the target (save for killing it). There is no threshold – if player A deals 40 percent of all the damage to the target, player B deals 30 percent of all the damage done to the target and then player C deals the remaining 30 percent and kills it, player A will get the “assist”. Kill or assist requirements often come together, so you can either achieve a kill, or an assist and both will count towards your mission progress.

Eliminate means that you have to destroy the target AND, at the same time, be the player dealing the most damage to it. What that means is that, in the case described above, no player would achieve elimination. However, if two players dealt 30 percent of damage each and then another player dealt 40 percent of damage and killed the target, that player would achieve elimination.

How can I obtain Battle Coins?

There are several ways of obtaining them:

  • By completing Repeatable Battle Coins missions or Challenges
  • By completing missions from one of the three basic mission chains
  • By purchasing them or winning them in an official Armored Warfare event
  • By just playing

It’s worth noting that:

  • Special Battle Coin boosters can be obtained for Repeatable Battle Coin missions and for Battle Path level progression, increasing your Battle Coin income for two hours by 900 percent (these can also be saved for future Battle Paths)
  • Long queue waits are compensated by increased Battle Coin income
  • You will get Battle Coins for playing even without Battle Path access

The amount of Battle Coins for playing is calculated as such:

You’ll receive a fixed amount of Battle Coins (2 for PvE and GLOPS, 3 for PvP) for each minute of effective combat. Effective combat time is a new mechanic that counts only the time when you are active in battle (during or between the actions that contribute towards your team’s effort). The exact length will be rounded up for the purposes of rewards (eg. 41 seconds will be treated as 1 minute, 1:01 minute as 2 minutes etc.) and will be available on the results screen.

Like before, winning will multiply your reward (by 1.25 for PvE and GLOPS and by 1.5 for PvP) but you’ll also receive extra Battle Coins for being amongst the best players on the battlefield (4 for Top 2 in PvE, 5 for Top 5 in PvP and 10 for Top 5 in GLOPS).

How long will the campaign be available?

The Battle Path missions will be available for the duration of 3 months. The remaining time can be seen in the Battle Path window in the game.

What unique prizes can I look forward to for participating in the Battle Path?

The Battle Path level prizes include:

The standard Level progression also includes the Jomsviking skins. The three basic mission chains include unique camouflage for three environments. Other valuable prizes such as avatars and decals await you as well.

Can I complete the chain missions within a chain in any order?

No. You need to complete them in the order specified by each chain, one after another. It is, however, possible to complete a mission by spending extra Battle Coins. You can see which mission is currently active by visiting the Mission tab of the Battle Path window. The completed missions are marked with a green ticker and the missions that are yet to be unlocked are marked with a lock icon.

How many Battle Coins does unlocking each level cost?

Advancing to another level costs 50 to 1500 Battle Coins for Levels 1-10 and 4500 Battle Coins for Levels 11-50.

Can I see the progress of my missions in the game?

Yes, in the Battle Path window.

Can I complete more missions at the same time, or the next one only starts after the previous one is finished?

The next one only starts after the previous one is finished. You need to pick up your mission reward manually in the Battle Path window in order to activate the next mission. However, it is possible to have up to three missions active simultaneously and to complete them all in one battle (if their requirements do not prohibit you from doing so). It is also possible to complete a Battle Coin mission, a regular chain mission and a Challenge at the same time.

How do I know what vehicles to use and what modes to enter when completing a mission?

Each mission has its own set of requirements that are sometimes randomized. Mission requirements are stated in each mission’s description, above the mission’s text and main objective description. Please pay attention to the requirements such as Assist, Kill or Eliminate, as these all have different meanings (explained above).

When do I receive a prize that I win, for example by advancing by a level?

You will receive it automatically, within 30 minutes of you receiving it.

If I didn’t receive the reward I won fair and square, what do I do?

Please contact our support service.

What are Repeatable Battle Coin Missions?

There are three missions available:

  • Deal a certain amount of damage (each point of damage against player vehicles will count as five for the purpose of this mission)
  • Destroy a certain number of enemy vehicles (each player vehicle will count as five)
  • Earn a certain amount of net Experience

The cooldown of these missions is 72 hours. However, there’s a twist to them. Upon each cooldown, each of these three missions will also contain a randomly chosen set of conditions. For example, the Battle Path may ask you to deal damage while driving a Marat Shishkin Tank Destroyer, or a Sol Schreiber vehicle of any class.

What are Challenges?

Challenges (there will be ten of them in total) will open on weekly basis as the event progresses. Each Challenge requires you to do something (for example, deal 15.000 damage in PvE/GLOPS or 3.000 damage in PvP) and consists of ten stages, each more difficult than the last. The abovementioned Challenge opening will be server-based, so joining the Battle Path two weeks into it will allow you to start with two Challenges already unlocked.

What is the Shop?

The Shop Battle Path tab allows you to exchange the Battle Coins you don’t need for the actual Level progression for valuable items such as:

  • CV90120 Ghost parts
  • Credits
  • Boosters
  • Premium Time
  • Premium vehicles (including Tier 10 ones and those from the previous Battle Paths)
  • Commanders (including Ophelia Kitescu and Alisa Korhonen)
  • Epic skins

The items on offer are periodically renewed so every single offer set is available for a limited time only. Additionally, a manual re-roll is available for 300 Battle Coins. Aside from the Elite missions, the Shop is the only way you may obtain enough CV90120 Ghost parts to assemble the vehicle (you need 100 of those).

What is the Workshop?

The Workshop Battle Path tab will allow you to modify your Battle Path vehicles (including those from the older Battle Paths) with additional performance-enhancing or modifying modules that will be available for completing a certain number of Battle Path Missions (chain missions or Battle Coin missions) or Challenges.

These modules will become available only when you obtain the vehicle itself, although the completed missions and challenges from this Battle Path will count retroactively. With some effort, all these upgrades will be obtainable during the Northern Wind Battle Path but it is worth noting that if you don’t manage to do that, future Battle Path missions and challenges will count towards them as well.

Challenges:

Mission sets:

Quote

Class-specific:

All the class-specific missions except for the second set are identical.

  1. Deal 50000 damage. Damage to player vehicles is multiplied by 5.
  2. Class-specific:
    • MBT: Deflect 40000 damage. Damage from players is multiplied by 5.
    • LT/AFV: Help allies deal 40000 damage. Damage dealt to player vehicles is multiplied by 5.
    • TD/SPG: Deal 40000 damage while not being spotted. Damage to player vehicles is multiplied by 5.
  3. Deal 30000 damage while using HEAT, HESH or ATGM ammo. Damage to player vehicles is multiplied by 5.
  4. Deal 20000 damage to immobilized vehicles. Damage to player vehicles is multiplied by 5.
  5. Deal 10000 damage to higher Tier vehicles. Damage to player vehicles is multiplied by 5.
  6. Finish in Top 3 in the XP ranking 10 times (PvP) or collect 10 Blue Star medals (PvE)

Elite missions:

  1. In 10 battles, help allies deal 2000 (Random Battles), 6000 (Global Operations) or 8000 (PvE) damage. Damage dealt to player vehicles is multiplied by 5.
  2. Destroy or help destroy 100 higher Tier enemies. Each player vehicle kill counts as 10.
  3. In 10 battles, destroy or help destroy 3 (Random Battles), 10 (Global Operations) or 20 (PvE) enemy vehicles.
  4. Eliminate 100 enemies. Each player vehicle elimination counts as 10.
  5. In 10 battles, deal 5000 (Random Battles), 15000 (Global Operations) or 25000 (PvE) damage.

Just some observations and possible tips for making the BP less miserable:

  • Ignore the ranks altogether until the very last day, that way you save up on coins in case something pops up on the coin shop that you really want.
  • Grind the challenges, repeatables and mission sets for coins. The mission sets in particular are extremely easy this time, the Kurganets Ghost parts for the elite missions are practically freebies.
  • Play spec ops for damage farming.
  • Play heroics for net XP and missions that require you to find higher tier enemies.
  • Cheese wherever you see fit, only play just enough to complete your mission requirements and move on. All those elite mission that require you to do something 10 times are good examples.
  • Pick up the coin offers in the shop as often as you can, apparently you can get steep discounts like these

A few things of note about the reward vehicles that I'm not sure got picked up since their announcements

CV90105 TML

  • The TML's heat round is fairly competitive compared to the Stingray 2, with 520 damage and 744 penetration (stingray 2 gets 510 damage and 770 pen) giving it slightly more damage per shot but slightly less penetration. The AP rounds are identical
  • The reload time for the TML's guns was reduced by 2 seconds (28s/16s for the 12/5 shot guns) and the optional upgrade for the 12-shot gun now reduces the cyclic time from 2.5s to 2.2s
  • Aim time on the TML is 1.41s, meaning that you can just about get a fully-aimed shot off without any delay when using the 5-round clip (1.3s reload)
  • The ability to use vision control of the TML is better than the Stingray 2, with an extra 2% camo (32% with paint) and 30m view range (450m with the view range unlock) before retrofits and skills
  • Armour seems like it will be fairly reliable against autocannons from the front, with a few minor weak spots (290mm gun mantlet, 120mm turret ring, lower glacis of 210mm/180mm/145mm at tope/center/bottom)

CV90 Mk IV

  • Base camo and view range are superior to it its peers at 480m (510m when stopped) and 36% with paint. Probably good enough to give the VBR a run for its money
  • Armour seems surprisingly good on paper (better than Marder on stats card!), can probably stop a lot of autocannon AP from the front if it doesn't hit the few weakspots (125mm turret ring, 205mm/180mm/80mm lower glacis)
  • Gun stats are copy-paste from Marder (same accuracy, aim time, reload, and damage) but trades the PELE for HE (as previously mentioned) with 95 damage and 40mm pen

CV90120 Ghost

  • The ghost gets access to the upgraded transmission for the tier 9/10 LTs, allowing it to reach 85 km/h
  • The upgraded AP round for the single-shot gun only increases the penetration only offers increased penetration (850mm instead of 800mm) for the same damage (600)
  • The ready rack gun has significantly less damage per shot (510 vs 600 for AP and 610 vs 720 for HEAT) as well as reduced penetration (780mm AP instead of 800mm, 855mm HEAT instead of 880mm)
  • There is a built-in flash suppressor upgrade that reduces the camo penalty from firing by 50% (this is in addition to ADAPTIV)
  • Reload times for the ready rack got buffed from 5.6s per shot to 5s per shot and 2.8s cyclic to 2.4s, while the single-shot gun got buffed from 5s to 4.4s
  • Turret armour will not resist large-caliber AP/HEAT rounds, but should be able to resist all auto-cannon AP from the front (>400mm). The weakest points of the frontal armour are the turret ring (190mm), the parts of the lower glacis not covered in applique (210mm), and the rest of the lower glacis (290-310mm)

Strv 2000

  • Armour seems strong from the front, but far from invulnerable. Lower glacis is 800mm/700mm/600mm against AP (with the 800mm and 700mm portions being covered with three segments of 600mm NERA) and 880mm/770mm/900mm against HEAT (880mm and 770mm parts covered in the three segments of 900-1200mm NERA). The turret ring is venerable to HEAT and ATGMs with 920mm of protection. Turret sides are >400mm except for the rear-most part (250mm) and hull sides are between 200mm and 400mm (the rear-most section is 200mm and is covered by a piece of 35mm spaced armour, the 400mm and 250mm sections are covered by 9 segments of the same NERA as the front).
  • Once the NERA is gone, you have comparable protection against large-caliber AP and HEAT as a light tank, but maintain complete resistance against autocannon AP for most of the frontal arc
  • The known stats for the 140mm gun are unchanged, but the stats that were previously unknown are directly comparable to a stock XM1A3 (accuracy of 0.129 and aim time of 2.38s are the same as the stock XM1A3). The upgraded XM1A3 will still have the superior 140mm gun since it has access to upgrades that the Strv does not (10% accuracy increase, 20% aim time reduction, an improved AP round and a RoF upgrade) that more than make up for the extra 40 damage on the Strv's HEAT round
  • DPM on the 40mm is around 11.4k before retros, with the first/second/third shots of each burst having 230/~310/~400 penetration at 100m. Note that for every shot of the burst that does not penetrate reduces the DPM of the autocannon by ~3.8k (11.4k if all 3 pen, 7.6k if 2 pen, 3.8k if only 1 pen). This seems to be an acceptable trade off compared to the Obj 195's 30mm autocannon since it trades anywhere between ~37% to ~79% of the 195's autocannon DPM for 15% to 100% more penetration (although how acceptable it actually is remains to be seen)

tl;dr:

  • The TML seems like it will be a good alternative to the Stingray 2
  • The Mk IV is probably going to be exceptionally good once it is fully upgraded
  • The single-shot Ghost is on par with or better than both the Thunderbolt and Anders nearly across the board (aim time is a notable exception), while the ready-rack Ghost trades sustained DPM for a lackluster amount of burst DPM
  • The only thing that might make the Strv OP will be the autocannon (if anything, it seems like the Strv would actually be underperforming if it didn't have the autocannon)

The STRV also has a quite large weakspot to PISH - it's upper frontal plate is green - While not a major thing, means that it'll be weaker to the ATDU then most other MBT's frontally:

I must admit I am having fun with the current BP, and having the previous BP tanks makes it more interesting.

There's also tension with the storyline campaign, which is pretty much limited to progression vehicles regardless of which faction you pick. So it's a choice between grinding with a prem to optimize credit revenue, or grinding with a progression vehicle to have the battles count towards the campaign. Sigh.

I seem to remember that in one of the old BP topics, there was a reply with "most have premiums" from the BP... Can anyone make one of those again?

My share of personal opinion of what premium vehicles worth buy in BP shop for new player

Top  Tanks to Buy

  1. XM247 York
  2. Termi 2017
  3. Obj 195
  4. Obj 640
  5. Obj 490
  6. Type 10
  7. ZTQ
  8. Exp Tank
  9.  Seogun

There is a middle ground of really nice vehicles, i skip generic premiums available in shop for gold

  1. T-14 152
  2. AFT-10
  3. Type 99A2-140
  4. Oplot-BM
  5. Termi 2000
  6. K1A1
  7. M1A1 Storm
  8. Type 90
  9. Taifun

Top Tanks to avoid -- though they considered "good in skilled hands" , in general they are collectibles and offer either specific gameplay, or there are simply (much) better vehicles than these.

  1. CATTB (Tier 5 MBT has better DPM than this)
  2. AGDS (better look on stuff like Hunter, Kurganiec, ADATS, AFT-10)
  3. QN-506 (same as AGDS)
  4. Altay (better look Type 10)
  5. Pindad
  6. RDF/LT
  7. M60-2000

wait isn't it getting buffed some time soon, otherwise double shot capability but dreadful bloom between shots, eats atgms due to massive turret roof and lower plate. Back in the day when this was introduced it became pvp cancer so bad it was nerfed excessively.

They undid some nerf, but not that much. I even think it is playable again with HEAT and Cortez in pve without feeling of sadness and uselessness.  Not a mainstream newbee thing though.

It was nerfed something like 5 times - twice during its BP - and was never really buffed.  It is certainly playable in PvE, but it's not good.  Not at all.

I'll reserve final judgement until they actually do tweak it again, but honestly the gun isn't the real problem with the tank. Sure, the gun is worse than the XM1A3's in many ways, but it's still serviceable.  For me, the problem is that the armor is pathetic for a Tier 10 MBT.  It gets penned regularly in PvE both HEAT and AP.  The story we were told is that it is supposed to be strong against AP and weak against HEAT, but in reality it is weak to both.

  4. Altay (better look Type 10)
  5. Pindad
  6. RDF/LT
  7. M60-2000

Somehow I think it is more than just luck.... I checked the shop almost every day during the last BP, and never saw anything over T8... I suspect it may have something to do with overall battle coin balance.

+1 on XM247 York.  Most T5 players have learned to despise these, but the cure for that is to own one. I tend to hold off on playing mine that often to be kind to others, but there are just times when you want to quickly finish a contract mission and the York is the one to git 'er done.

Obj 195 is a lot of fun. I love the big boom, and the AC is decent to keep busy while reloading. The ZTQ is also worth it as a T9 LT, although if one is going to get the Ghost from the current BP, it might fill a similar niche to the ZTQ.

On that note, does anyone have experience to see how the Ghost compares to the ZTQ??

Confirmation bias.

ZTQ offers superior gun depression and sniping from very tricky hull-down positions. ZTQ modular ERA armor allows to bounce few hits.

Ghost has better shell (and it gets better with upgrade).

In everything else they are quite similar.

My share of personal opinion of what premium vehicles worth buy in BP shop for new player

Top  Tanks to Buy

  1. XM247 York
  2. Termi 2017
  3. Obj 195
  4. Obj 640
  5. Obj 490
  6. Type 10
  7. ZTQ
  8. Exp Tank
  9.  Seogun

There is a middle ground of really nice vehicles, i skip generic premiums available in shop for gold

  1. T-14 152
  2. AFT-10
  3. Type 99A2-140
  4. Oplot-BM
  5. Termi 2000
  6. K1A1
  7. M1A1 Storm
  8. Type 90
  9. Taifun

Top Tanks to avoid -- though they considered "good in skilled hands" , in general they are collectibles and offer either specific gameplay, or there are simply (much) better vehicles than these.

  1. CATTB (Tier 5 MBT has better DPM than this)
  2. AGDS (better look on stuff like Hunter, Kurganiec, ADATS, AFT-10)
  3. QN-506 (same as AGDS)
  4. Altay (better look Type 10)
  5. Pindad
  6. RDF/LT
  7. M60-2000

I would like to modify your list a little bit for tanks to buy (in my own opinion of course):

  • Add the Type 90:  it is solid in PvE and PvP
  • Move to middle ground the Exp Tank.  It has been a bit too squishy since the day it was released.  it has potential but at that tier you can do better for light tanks.
  • Add Oplot-BM (if you like the Russian style MBT play)
  • Add the Altay.  It is solid in PvP and a good K2 clone

Other than that, good list.

Also, I would move K1A1 up. It is absolute murder machine in PvE with its 8.3k DPM with HEAT at tier 7.

yeah I have it fully upgraded and it's a beast as hell :)

OK, finally got offered a QN-506.... and thankfully passed on it because of the advice on this forum. Plus I already have Kurganets-25, thanks to last year's advice.  :-)

I got the QN-506 last year after receiving a 50k purchase in the Shop after I'd already completed the Battle Path.  I went ahead and bought it because I hadn't been seeing many things in the Shop that I didn't already own, and had been wanting to try it.

I get what people mean when they say it isn't as good as other vehicles, but it's still very good in PvE and there are some maps where that spotting drone is super useful.  Cavalry, for example, when no one wants to advance for fear that the LT will show up suddenly and get them insta-gibbed by the collected bots in the final cap.

Just some coin shop data so far. I will make no analysis here yet, not until I collect enough data.

I'm putting that 250k coins to good use.

Have not seen a single unique offer yet and got my 3rd special offer just today (Bmpt 2017, K1A1, Chall. 1 Falcon).

Are you re-rolling?

Back to the Premium ratings...

(Middle ground vehicles)
5. Termi 2000

The only rationale that I can see for calling any Terminator a "middle ground" vehicle is that you can get the Ramka-99 for free, so don't really need a Premium Terminator.  Otherwise, all of them (including the Tier 9 Termi 2) are OPAF in PvE.  The Termi 2000 is probably the least OP of the Tier 8 trio, but it's still insanely OP in PvE and I highly recommend it unless you just don't care because the Ramka-99 exists.

My personal opinion that just re-rolls outside of active Russian online gambling peak (or when very fortunate Russian streamers stream their incredible wins - that is around 16-20 PM of GMT-3 ) may not be helpful at all. There is static pool of high end rare rewards which rotates in loop, then you never see them again. The pool refreshes once per hour (not necessarily at 00 minute), probably it is only truth for said "high gamble" hours, i conclude that the reward pool exhausts faster.

Was fortunate enough to get OPhelia as a unique offer... so after picking her up, I will have enough BC left for the Ghost parts, but not much else unless I buy more BC (oof).

The question is are any of the other CV90 tanks worth getting during this BP?  I already have a Stingray 2, Object 195 and a ZTQ....
